I don’t know anyone that couldn’t use a little extra income. A date night once a month to that new restaurant that opened up downtown, to confidently wearing those shoes you’ve been swooning over, extra money is never a bad thing. Which is exactly why you may be thinking about a side hustle. 

Extra income looks different for everyone but earning it should be fun no matter how you do it.  So here’s the first rule to making money and making it fun:

Remove, “But I am not a salesperson” from your vocabulary. 

Listen, I’ve said it over years and even believed it too. 

But here’s what I’ve learned as an entrepreneur for over 22 years………… (dramatic pause for how old that makes me sound)

Being a salesperson is not a bad thing. Why would we fear sounding salesy when we’re trying to make a sale?

It’s gotten a bad rap and negative connotation over the years as something that is sleazy and slimy. That if  you’re selling something you’re obviously trying to take advantage of people. 

Now, I’m not going to deny that some people do in fact do that, but sales and marketing in general have shone a pretty bright light on the fact that you can’t be slimy to be successful. 

But how can you be in sales and not feel sleazy while doing it?

Shift your focus to sharing.

When we find something we love and our heart is for sharing it with others over selling to everyone, there is no possible way to be a sleazy salesperson. 

When we tell ourselves “But, I’m not a salesperson” that is simply a cop-out. It’s much easier to say we aren’t a salesperson so that when we don’t see the result we wanted, we have that excuse to fall back on.

I would have believed that years ago too, except now I know the truth. 

Extensive research and training as an Enneagram coach and Life Coach has taught me that our brains are wired to keep us safe and that excuses come from fear. Staying safe is literally our brain’s main job. So if we tell ourselves that we aren’t a salesperson we are now safe from fear. Well done brain. 

The problem is, that we need to challenge our brains to get out of our comfort zones. We are never going to grow when we are comfortable. And trust me, as an Enneagram 9 comfort is my deepest desire so I get it. I want to be comfortable too, but I also want to make an impact. In order to do that, I need to step outside of my comfort zone baby step by baby step. I need to show myself that I can keep a promise to myself and do what I say I will do.

Even if that fearful thing is making REELS. Simply because I have told myself I’m not good at them, LOL. But if you aren’t allowed to say, “I’m not a salesperson,” I’m not allowed to say, “I’m not good at making reels.”

The point is, I believe anyone can be successful in business if they give themselves a shot. The first step in that is to stop telling yourself you aren’t a salesperson and have fun sharing something you love.
