“Being your own boss is so easy. You get to work on your time and your terms without taking orders from anyone.”
If you’ve never run your own business, I am sure you can agree with that narrative I told myself over and over before becoming an entrepreneur. Trust me, I sure believed it. From the outside looking in, I couldn’t wait to run my own show. How hard could it possibly be, right? Work when you want, doing what you want, however you want. So easy.
At least that’s what I thought. And I actually hear it a lot from other business owners, too. The idea that having your own business seems so easy until you get about knee-deep into it and you quickly realize you were looking at things with rose-colored glasses.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s so exciting in the beginning and that excitement does make it seem “easy”. Your brain can’t think fast enough and you can’t keep up with the one million ideas rushing through your mind 24/7. The creative part comes fairly easy and it’s exciting to dream and plan and create. But then there’s everything else that is involved with running a business and you quickly realize it isn’t as fun or easy as you once thought.
Doing it all and being the one to make all of the decisions becomes really overwhelming and this is where I see a lot of business owners throw in the towel. When the reality of running a business isn’t as easy as they once thought.
This is why having the right people to help you is so important. Hiring the people who can do the parts of your business you don’t love doing or you’re not skilled at allows you the freedom to focus on the areas of your business you truly enjoy. The things that had you feeling this was going to be so easy when you first started.
That’s not to say when you hire out help everything will suddenly be sunshine and roses again. Running a successful business is hard work, even when it’s work you love. But that’s the sweet spot. When you’re working hard, putting in a lot of hours, and solving all of the problems, yet you can still step back and say, “I love what I do”, that’s when you know you’re working in your lane. That’s when you can say, “It’s hard work, but easy to enjoy”.
Owning a business isn’t meant to be easy. But it isn’t meant to be painful, either. Find your strengths, discover the areas of your business you love working, and walk in that gifting. You were never meant to do it all. That is never easy. But I do believe if you have a dream in your heart, you were meant for business and I’m here to help you make it fun!
