I wanted a space for online connection and community. 

And so I did what anyone living in the 21st century would do, I created a Facebook group.

When we were thinking of a name for this group, my team and I brainstormed all the ideas. I wanted it to be fun and easy to remember but it was also important that it represented me and my purpose behind the group. Super easy, right?

If you have ever tried to give something a name, you probably know that it’s actually not that easy at all. And if you’re anything like me, you just want it done without spending forever thinking about it, which sometimes makes it ever trickier. But I knew I had to spend some time thinking one through because the community I was hoping to build deserved that kind of intention from me.  

We started by thinking of things I like. Easy enough. Bon Jovi, pizza, wine, 80’s music, plants, cookies, Jesus. 

Then we thought of how I wanted the group to feel. Fun, warm, inviting, safe, informative.

And from those two lists, absolutely nothing stood out to us. I told you, this wasn’t easy. I was ready to throw in the towel and just call it, “Livin on a Prayer and Chocolate” but thank goodness my team shut that down. 

Then I looked down at the coaster my glass of red wine was sitting on and in bright gold letters I read, “Speak Easy.”

“That’s a cute name” I thought. But I literally had just said that I didn’t want the group to have an alcoholic connotation attached to it. I mentioned it casually, but we moved on and kept brainstorming.

But my brain kept coming back to the words, “Speak Easy.” I knew what a speakeasy was, but in my mind it was just a really cool, secret place where people could gather to connect. A place that was just secret enough that it felt safe. 

And my heart and intention for this group was to create a safe space for people to come and “speak easily” with one another.

And let’s be honest, I love a good place to enjoy a good glass of wine.

To me, there was no other choice, and that’s how the SpeakEasy was born. With a glass of red wine and a coaster that really spoke to me. 

Even though it’s not a secret place to gather, it does provide a space for anyone to come together to talk about life, business and all the in between. Whether you need a space to talk about your latest business wins, ask questions about entrepreneurship, or vent about how your kid’s latest homework assignment made you feel like you needed a tutor, my hope is that you will find comfort in knowing you can “SpeakEasy” when you’re there.
