Have you heard that phrase before? Have you ever taken the time to do it? Do you even know what I’m talking about? If not, you’re in luck because I’m about to teach you all about how to clarify your brand message!
If you are anything like me, when I first started studying the StoryBrand Framework and learning that one of the most important things I could do for my business was to clarify my brand message, I had no idea what that meant.
What do you mean clarify my message? I didn’t even have a message, how was I supposed to clarify it?
And a lot of entrepreneurs I chat with today say the same thing. They don’t have a message to clarify simply because they never knew their brand even needed a message in the first place. So that’s why this topic is so important.
In order to easily understand how to do this, let’s define a few words so we’re clear on precisely what it means to clarify your brand message. And then we’ll dive into why it’s so important.
Sound good?
First up, what does the word clarify truly mean?
According to Oxford Languages, clarify means to make a statement or situation less confusing and more clearly comprehensible.
Are your customers confused by what it is that you sell or offer?
Because here’s the thing, “If You Confuse, You’ll Lose.”
It’s a phrase that plays over and over again in my head each time I think about my businesses. And in case you’re wondering, that’s truly all of the time.
When I was going through my StoryBrand certification this was one of the biggest takeaways for me. Am I communicating the purpose and mission of my business clearly? Am I making it too complicated? Do people really understand what it is that I sell or have to offer? Am I making it clear that I am here to serve other entrepreneurs through free resources like my blog and podcast? Do they also know I have courses and communities available to them?
I talk a lot about the things you need to think of when starting a new business and this may just be at the top of my list. Right out of the gate, as soon as you dream up the idea, clearly define what you do and what you have to offer your ideal customer.
Do you know what your brand is? Do you know how you stand out in the crowd amongst millions of other brands that have similar offerings as you?
Again, according to Oxford Languages, the most common definition of the word “brand” is an identifying mark burned on livestock. And while we aren’t here to talk about branding cattle, we do want to chat about how people identify you.
Branding is how you define who you are as a business and how consumers recognize you and create a feeling around your brand. It is how you hope to be perceived in the public eye and how you train your audience to know when they see content from you! Branding includes things like your logo, digital aesthetic on social media, websites, blogs, uniforms, business cards, marketing materials, and even your approach to customer service. And it all starts with your message.
According to, you guessed it, Oxford Languages, defines messaging as a significant point or central theme.
What is the point of your business? Do you have a theme you want your customers to identify with? What message do you want them to hear from you over and over again?
You may think your message has to be full of words in order to give your brand legitimacy, but I promise you, less is more when it comes to defining what you will do for your consumers.
But how do you do that? How do you eliminate the fluff?
Constantly remind yourself of this one crucial rule.
Decide exactly what you want your potential client to know about your business and get rid of the rest. Anything else is a distraction that will cost your business in the long run.
Have you ever taken the time to clarify your brand message? Maybe this is the first time you’ve even heard of such a thing. Regardless of where you stand with your brand messaging, I hope this helps you understand a little more about why you need to do it.
Clarifying your brand message is something I am constantly talking about. I know just how crucial it is to the growth of any business. And I am so passionate about it that I’m making it one of my main focuses in 2023. Be sure to keep to stay in the loop as I announce a really fun, new offering coming to you so soon!
