Here at The Blush Pages, we understand the importance of having good copy. It is a topic our team is always chatting about. Is our message clear, is our audience captivated, are we providing copy that is pushing our brand to the right people? Well, today we had the opportunity to sit down with one of our very own founding members, Janae Acosta to chat about what it looks like to be a professional copywriter. We simply love this interview and we know you will too!
Janae shares all about her abrupt pivot in her previous business, that she ran for 13 years, once covid hit. The rug was pulled out from under her as a massage therapist and she bravely followed her dreams by starting a new business as a copywriter. She has kindly created an incredibly FREE e-book for our followers where she shares some of her secrets to leveling up your copywriting skills.

INTERVIEW:
First: tell us a little about your business.
In a nutshell, I write things for you and your business. Writing to attract people to your business can be a challenge for many. I take on the task of handling your monthly blog pots for your site, email marketing services for your lists, and writing the content of your business offerings for a sharable digital brochure. You as the business owner will share your main details and what you would like to convey to your customers. I take care of writing it and making it simple to understand and relate to.
What inspired you to start your business?
I’m the biggest introvert and I love to stay home! I worked as a Massage Therapist, running my own thing for 13 years. Once covid hit, that stopped abruptly, and I absolutely loved being home. I also love writing so I did blog posts and finally decided I can actually get paid to do something else I love, writing. I took some copywriting courses and decided to go in that direction.
What has been the easiest part of running a business? What has been the hardest?
It’s still so new for me…. Not even gonna hide that, we have to start somewhere, right? The easy thing is sitting down to write, the hard thing is also, sitting down to write! Haha! When I’m feeling inspired, it comes easy. And when I know I have to meet a deadline, I can sometimes get in my head and tell myself why I’m not good enough or why my writing isn’t enough… all lies that I conscientiously work on to improve. Also, I love the critique from others— I admit some days it’s easy other days, not so much. I accept it because it’s necessary for growth on so many levels, but taking in what’s relevant and what’s not, can get tricky. Hearing “it’s great” over and over is not going to allow for growth.
What keeps you going when things get difficult?
I tell myself the challenge is worth it. for some reason, changing the word ‘difficult’ to the word ’challenge’ instead helps me immensely! I can tell myself “I’m up for the challenge.” Dwelling on difficult can make me easily talk myself into believing I won’t hit the goal. Also, lots of breaks when things look like a jumbled hot mess! Ha!… My self-care which can be as simple as stopping for a cup of tea, keeps me going as well.
What is one tip you would give someone just starting their business?
Just start. Write down all your ideas and go for it. Get that free website, make that quick post on IG, and just go for it. Things are not all planned out all the time. Sometimes it’s a matter of starting with the idea and figuring out the big stuff as you go. Believing you have something to offer, and going for it.
What is Freelance writing/ copywriting?
So many ask me these question when I say I do it… my simple explanation: It means I work as a Self Employed Writer. I May get the credit for the article, perhaps written in my voice but written as a guest post for another site or business or perhaps writing for a magazine regularly with my signature at the bottom. Freelance writing could also include copywriting which means I write content for people and businesses as a ghostwriter….It’s their property. I don’t get the credit for writing the piece, it’s written in the voice of their business not my own & they get to use it as they see fit.
