As entrepreneurs, we love to dream, right? We love the opportunities to be creative and create something beautiful for the world. But there comes a point when we have to ask ourselves, are our dreams generating any income? Are we becoming profitable with the business we’ve created?
This is a mistake I see so many entrepreneurs making. They become so consumed with the dreaming and creative space of entrepreneurship and forget to focus their efforts on the making money side of things.
So they begin to believe that they have to spend a lot of time each week on making their business profitable so they start doing things that don’t make sense for their bottom line. Simply because they believe that in the long run, those hours will magically turn into money. Does this sound familiar? Have you been here before? It’s okay, I’ve been there too!

Because we’ve been raised to believe the wrong things about time, we think that simply spending time on our business will make us profitable. We get stuck in the trap of believing in quantity over quality. That the hours we spend are greater than how we spend them.
But are we spending our time doing the right things? In fact, do we even know what the right things are? It’s really easy to sit around and talk about how we need to be working on the right things, but how in the world do we know what that looks like?
We have all of these things that we think we need to be doing for our business. Being active on social media, networking with friends and other business owners, creating content and attractive branding, advertising and marketing our products or services, running to events and vendor shows, crunching numbers, and keeping everything in order. There is so much we could be doing for our business. But what are the things we should be doing? That’s the real question.
Check out my course, The Profit Plan, for some of my best answers to that question!
We have to spend time focused on income-producing activities. Only the things that bring in income should get our attention. Sending out newsletters is great, but is there content within those newsletters that help to produce income? Are you driving your readers to a place that makes a profit? No matter what items you have on your to-do list, they must be things that in the long run produce consistent income month after month.
Once you pinpoint the actions that create profit for your business you can focus your attention on those things with the time you have. Even when you don’t have a lot of it.
Becoming profitable in your business is reliant on doing the right things for your business. It is how you spend your time that matters, not how much of it you are spending.
