QUESTION: What inspired you to start your business?
ANSWER: There’s a few things that were the catalyst to begin my business. I had been in the professional working field for 15 years at the same time freelancing on the side. It was my freelancing clients that I really liked working with. It was the most creative work I did compared to my corporate job. In my corporate jobs, I always strived to be the best but there was always a limit to how far I could go and I didn’t feel inspired. I didn’t feel challenged. At the time, this was almost 5 years ago I could see how the online space was changing how freelancers worked and decided to take this path. I stayed in my 9-5, learning, and getting ready. Shortly after this, I found out I was pregnant. A few months after I had my first was really the push to get out. More than ever I wanted more freedom, my own schedule. 6 months later I put in my notice!
QUESTION: What has been the easiest part of running a business? What has been the hardest?
ANSWER: I don’t know if there is exactly an easy part because I feel challenged all the time but in a good way. I would say though that I feel like I have had a lot of experience in what I do and think the easiest part is designing. Each of my client’s designs are so different and I really love figuring out each person/business’s design style. The hardest – wearing so many hats! Going from employee to CEO was the first challenge. Think and do like a boss! A continual challenge is time management. Life as a mom and CEO is constantly changing. I have 2 kids, 6, 3, and one on the way sooo things are always changing and my business adapts but that’s also the beautiful part of running my business I can change it however I want it to be and run!
QUESTION: What keeps you going when things get difficult?
ANSWER: When things get difficult I find that it’s a good time to look inward personally and business-wise. We go through emotions of self-doubt in difficult times so I think it’s especially a good time to do something that you enjoy that maybe you have been neglecting like reading, artwork, get your nails done, meditation, journaling, exercise… things that get your spirits back up and take a break from business. This gets you motivated to get back in the game and a lot of times gives you a new perspective and inspiration. It’s also a good time to look at how you can improve processes in your business. I enjoy the downtime because I can work on the things I have put on the back burner of my business. I truly believe that good is right around the corner. Have trust, work on yourself and your business so you’re prepared.
QUESTION: What is one tip you would give someone just starting their business?
ANSWER: Get systems in place FIRST! Contracts, bookkeeping, client management systems, project management systems, social management systems, etc. All the things we probably don’t want to do because it takes up so much time but I promise you it saves you time in the long run and it helps you stay consistent. It also makes you look so professional. For my business, branding and creating a website seem overwhelming to others and it is if that’s not what you do. The systems make it less daunting for my clients and so many tell me, I loved your process, you made it easy and you are so organized, I knew exactly what to expect. When improving your business the question should be how can I make this easier for my client and myself. The answer will always be in using some kind of system.
QUESTION: What would you tell someone who wants branding or a website that is just starting out and is on a budget?
ANSWER: If there is a designer that you have been looking at I encourage you to reach out because a lot of times there are different tiers depending on your budget. I tell people to work with what you can. I would never say in order for you to make X amount in your business you need to invest X amount. If you are unsure about your messaging, your audience, services or anything in your business from the beginning work with what you can. Sometimes it takes being in the business for a few months to get clarity. Aside from DIYing, there are templates and pricing tiers that designers can work with others on different budgets.
