In a world of online business marketing and social media at everyone’s fingertips, it’s so important to know how to write content that people will listen to. When you don’t have a chance to be in front of your audience face to face, you have to rely solely on your words and you want them to be good enough to keep them coming back for more.
But how do you do that?
It’s actually much simpler than you may think and you don’t have to have a fancy degree to help you do it! When it comes to writing good copy, there are a few things you need to focus on. Much like telling a story, your writing should follow a structure with a beginning, middle, and end. Bonus points for you if your story has an exciting climax and interesting ending!
These few simple steps will have you writing seamless copy in no time so be sure to take notes!
CLEAR COMMUNICATION IS KEY.
You have to know your message before you can communicate it to your audience. Be sure to know all of the details and don’t leave important information out. I always say that if you confuse, you lose. So be sure to not confuse your audience with writing that is hard to understand.
SOMETIMES LESS IS MORE.
Use as few words as possible. Skim your copy and take out any words that don’t serve a purpose. I know it feels like the more words, the better, but this isn’t a high school English class. There is no word count requirement and sometimes the more words you include, the less likely someone is to read it.
WRITE AS YOU SPEAK.
Your copy should sound like a conversation. If you wouldn’t speak a certain way in a conversation, don’t speak like that in your writing. People should be able to hear your speaking voice as they read your words, that’s how you know you’re writing as you would speak. In the end, regardless of what we are selling, our audience is buying us, so be sure to show up as your true authentic self in your words.
KEEP YOUR READER IN MIND.
Make sure you are producing copy that your reader would find interesting. This is why it is so important to really know your ideal client. You can’t write content they are interested in if you aren’t even sure who they are and what they enjoy
If you need help learning more about your ideal client, I teach all about that in my new course called The Profit Plan!
AVOID FANCY WORDS AND JARGON.
Don’t use words your readers have never heard of or wouldn’t understand. This muddies the water and confuses your message! Don’t make assumptions for them. Be sure to spell it all out and clearly explain what you are sharing in words that are familiar to everyone.
And if you feel like you’re running low on ideas for content to write about, I created 100 Writing Prompts that will take out all the guesswork on what to share and leave you more time for the actual writing process! Check them out here!
