Hi! I'm Melissa Koehler! A certified Story Brand guide, Enneagram trained, podcasting educator! Grab your favorite drink and stay awhile! Learn more about me right over here!
My passion is to offer connection, accountability, and online business education in order to help you build an incredible business, all while believing the truth that you don’t have to do it alone.
It’s a New Year, New You, right? So what better time than the present to finally launch your dream business?
If you have ever had a dream of starting a business that allows you to make good use of your gifts and talents all while bringing in extra income for your family, I just have one question for you. If not now, when?
I don’t know about you, but I love starting new things at the top of a new year. It’s the clean slate for me. The opportunity to put an entire year behind me and start fresh with a new set of goals and a new set of dreams and I’d love to see you do the same.
So first thing first. Why do you want to start this new business? If that seems like a loaded question it’s because it totally is. But take some time to write down ALL the reasons you want to start this new thing. And then post all of those reasons in a place where you will be forced to read it, again and again, every single day!
Okay, okay, maybe not every single day, but I do want you to assign yourself an amount of time each week that you set these goals into action!
Alright, now here comes the serious business. Set up the fundamentals every successful business owner needs.
As boring as it sounds, you’ve got to have it. Connect with an attorney in your state and get yourself set up with a license and all of the other legal requirements that come with owning a business.
Create a URL, purchase a domain, and get yourself set up with an online space. This may be something that you need to hire out if you don’t feel skilled in web design, but you want to have it all set up and ready to go before you ever announce your new business to the public.
Create an email address with the name of your business rather than directing clients to your personal email account. You want to do this in order to create a professional space for people to contact you.
This may be something else that you will need to hire out, but spend some time creating a logo with branding to match. In order to create the perfect brand, you will need to spend time thinking about your target audience and the things they would want to see in your brand. Put yourself in their shoes and create it specifically for them.
Even if you feel skilled in this arena, I highly recommend you hire a professional to help you manage the entire money side of your business. There are so many ends and outs in the financial world that it can never hurt to have a trained set of eyes on the numbers for you!
You may plan to conduct business on your already existing social media account and that is perfectly fine. But if you want a space on the internet dedicated solely to your business, you’re going to want to create separate social accounts across every social platform you’re using.
If you don’t yet have a newsletter going out to your audience, start one as soon as possible! Newsletters are the best way to reach your customers without fear that a social site or website may crash, leaving you without access to your audience. A newsletter belongs to you and only you and allows you immediate access to the inboxes of your following.
This is where you can let your creative juices fly. Everything you dream about or envision for your business, get it out of your mind and onto a board. Much like your WHY, be sure to keep this in a place where you can see it and visualize these dreams on a daily basis!
Now it’s time to create a plan for social media content. When will you post? What will you post? Where will you post it? Spend time creating content for an entire month to ensure you never run out of topics to share and be sure to have graphics or photos to go with all of your copy.
While you’re focusing on your social media game, don’t forget to spend time planning out your marketing strategy. Make a list of accounts you can collaborate or partner with to help spread the word about the launching of your dream business!
I know it seems like a lot. Trust me. I’ve been there a time or two. But throughout my 20 plus years of being an entrepreneur, I truly have learned what’s necessary and what just gets in the way when it comes to starting a new business. If you start here with these top crucial must-do’s for launching your dream, I am certain you will be set up on a firm foundation that cannot be shaken when times get tough!
