Hi! I'm Melissa Koehler! A certified coach, Enneagram trained, podcasting educator! Grab your favorite drink and stay awhile! Learn more about me right over here!
As I round out my month of helping you create systems for success in your business, I want to be sure to clear the air on one thing. There is no way to make every ounce of entrepreneurship easy all the time.
I’m sure you hear it all the time. “Being your own boss is so easy. You get to work on your time and your terms without taking orders from anyone.”
And if you’ve never run your own business, I am sure you can agree with that narrative I told myself over and over before becoming an entrepreneur. Trust me, I sure believed it. From the outside looking in, I couldn’t wait to run my own show. How hard could it possibly be, right? Work when you want, do what you want, however you want. So easy.
At least that’s what I thought. And I actually hear it a lot from other business owners, too. The idea that having your own business seems so easy until you get about knee-deep into it and you quickly realized you were looking at things with rose-colored glasses.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s so exciting in the beginning but that excitement does make it seem “easy”. Your brain can’t think fast enough and you can’t keep up with the one million ideas rushing through your mind 24/7. The creative part comes fairly easy and it’s exciting to dream and plan and create. But then there’s everything else that is involved with running a business and you quickly realize it isn’t as fun or easy as you once thought.
Doing it all and being the one to make all of the decisions becomes really overwhelming and this is where I see a lot of business owners throw in the towel. When the reality of running a business isn’t as easy as they once thought.
And before you think this blog post is trying to discourage you from you starting your own business, keep reading. I’m simply reminding you to ask for help.
This is why having the right people to help you is so important. Hiring the people who can do the parts of your business that you don’t love doing or you’re not skilled at allows you the freedom to focus on the areas of your business that you truly enjoy. The things that had you feeling this was going to be so easy when you first started.
That’s not to say that when you ask for help everything will suddenly be sunshine and roses again. Running a successful business is hard work, even when it’s work you love. But that’s the sweet spot. When you’re working hard, putting in a lot of hours, and solving all of the problems, yet you can still step back and say, “I love what I do,” that’s when you know you’re working in your lane. That’s when you can say, “It’s hard work, but easy to enjoy”.
So when all the systems are in place and the load still seems too hard to carry. Ask for help.
