Hi! I'm Melissa Koehler! A certified coach, Enneagram trained, podcasting educator! Grab your favorite drink and stay awhile! Learn more about me right over here!
Do you shop small? I know it isn’t always possible to support local businesses or small shops, but it’s so important to try as often as you can! Want to know the number one reason? An actual person does an actual dance in their living room when you purchase something from them. It’s through your support that they are not only able to fulfill their dreams, but feed their family and I don’t know about you, but I feel a lot of pride and pleasure knowing my small purchase can make such a big difference!
Today, I am featuring Andi from Andi Makes! Andie creates jewelry using all seed bead jewelry pieces that are made from glass beads and woven together with string. I hope you become inspired by her story and learn more about how you can support your local small businesses!

MK: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business.
Andie: My name is Andie and I make handwoven beaded jewelry. I started selling just about a year ago and it has been one of the most exciting and challenging things that I have ever done.
MK: Why did you decide to start your own business Andie Makes?
Andie: It has always been my dream to share my handmade items with others. I stumbled upon seed bead earrings on a trip to Venice and knew I had to go home and learn for myself. After spending a lot of time making them for fun and building my craft, I realized this was something that was going to stick and that there was a market for it. It took a lot of encouragement from friends and family to help me to finally take the leap and I am so glad I did.
MK: What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in creating your business?
Andie: The biggest lesson I have learned is it is okay to not have it all figured out. I think it is easy to keep telling yourself you’ll start when you have all of your ducks in a row but the reality is that you will always have more to learn and the best way to learn is to just start!
MK: What do you find is the best way to market yourself? Social media, craft fairs, farmers markets, email, newsletters, etc.? What works for you?
Andie: I have found what works for me is to be myself and play to my strengths. Newsletters and emails are not my strong suit, but I love making connections at craft fairs and on social media. However you choose to market your business, I think the thing to keep in mind is people who feel connected to your story are more likely going to want to support your business and tell others about it. Also, your friends and family are your best cheerleaders. Don’t be afraid to ask them to spread the word and post about you when they can.

MK: Lots of our followers have a desire to pursue their passions and turn them into a business, where do you feel is a good place to start?
Andie: A good place to start is to sit down and write down a business plan. This may sound overwhelming but can be so helpful in defining a clear vision for your business. My plan was very simple and included what made me stand out from others, what my goals and dreams were, and all of the details like naming and branding. Don’t be afraid to take the first step and ask for help along the way!
